An absorbent article, comprising: a front waist region; a back waist region; a crotch region positioned between the front waist region and the back waist region; a topsheet; a backsheet; an absorbent core disposed between the topsheet and the backsheet, the absorbent core comprising absorbent particulate polymer material and wood pulp; and wherein a cavity is defined in the absorbent core; wherein absorbent particulate polymer material is present in the cavity; wherein the cavity comprises a first channel extending in a first direction; wherein the cavity comprises a second channel extending in a second, different direction; wherein the first direction is transverse to the second direction, and wherein a portion of the first channel overlaps a portion of the second channel; wherein the cavity is discrete and is defined in and bounded by absorbent zones; and wherein the absorbent particulate polymer material in the cavity has a lower basis weight than other absorbent particulate polymer material in the absorbent core and not in the cavity.
